Why Compress Images?
- Faster website delivery
- Easier image sharing
- Smaller email attachments
- Faster uploads
- Less storage usage
- Reduced bandwidth usage
Smaller images can help pages load faster when implemented appropriately.
Find the Right Image Format
| Format | Best suited for | Transparency | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos and complex images | No | Photography |
| PNG | Lossless graphics | Yes | Logos and UI graphics |
| WebP | Modern web images | Yes | Websites and sharing |
| AVIF | Strong compression, where supported | Yes | Modern web |
No format is best for every image. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency; here it is compressed by reducing its color palette, and the file size can be tuned with Custom quality. AVIF is offered only when your browser can encode it.
Compression vs Resize
Compression
Re-encode the same dimensions. Lossy formats trade some visual fidelity for fewer bytes; smaller output is not guaranteed.
Resize
Use fewer pixels and smaller dimensions. This often reduces file size more substantially. We never enlarge your image.
Quality vs File Size
Higher encoder quality generally requires more data. Stronger compression can reduce file size at the cost of visual fidelity.
Illustrative trend, not a prediction. Results always show measured file sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an image compressor do?⌄
It re-encodes an image to try to reduce its file size. Results depend on the image, format and settings.
How does image compression reduce file size?⌄
Lossy encoders simplify image information; lossless formats represent pixels more efficiently. Resizing can also reduce the number of pixels.
Does compression reduce image quality?⌄
Lossy compression can remove detail. Compare your original and output before downloading. Encoder quality is not a measured percentage of visual fidelity.
Can I compress multiple images at once?⌄
Yes. Add up to 20 images per batch. They are processed one at a time to limit memory use.
Can I compress JPG images?⌄
Yes. Keep JPG or choose a supported output format and adjust quality.
Can I compress PNG images?⌄
Yes. PNG files are reduced to an optimized color palette. This is lossless when the image already uses 256 colors or fewer, and otherwise trades a little color detail for a much smaller file. In Custom mode, the quality slider sets how many colors are kept. You can also resize the image or explicitly choose WebP or JPG.
Can I compress WebP images?⌄
Yes, when your browser can decode and encode WebP. Available output formats are checked in your browser.
Can I convert JPG to WebP while compressing?⌄
Yes. Select WebP under Output Format. The result reports the actual output format and size.
Can I resize images?⌄
Enable Resize Image and enter maximum dimensions or choose a preset. Aspect ratio is preserved by default, and images are never enlarged.
Does image compression remove metadata?⌄
By default, images are re-encoded without their original metadata. This removes embedded camera and EXIF information. Unsupported preservation controls are clearly marked.
Are my images uploaded to a server?⌄
The core compression workflow runs locally in your browser. Images, filenames and metadata are not sent to analytics or stored on our server.
Is the image compressor free?⌄
Yes. No account is required to compress or download your images.
What image size can I upload?⌄
The workspace accepts up to 25 MB per image and 20 images per batch, with a pixel-dimension safety limit. Files your browser cannot decode are rejected.
Can I download all compressed images at once?⌄
Yes. One result downloads as an image. Multiple results are packaged into a ZIP in your browser.
What is the difference between compression and resizing?⌄
Compression changes how image data is encoded. Resizing changes the number of pixels. You can combine both.
Does compression change image dimensions?⌄
Only when you enable resizing. Otherwise the decoded dimensions are preserved.
Can I compress transparent PNG images?⌄
Yes. PNG, WebP and supported AVIF output can preserve transparency. JPG cannot; transparent areas are filled with your selected background color.
Why did my compressed image become larger?⌄
The original may already be optimized, or the selected encoder, format or metadata settings may use more bytes. We show a warning and never report negative bytes as savings.
Does compression work offline?⌄
Once the page and its processing code are loaded, compression runs locally. Reloading or opening the page may still require a connection; this is not an installed offline app.
Which image format should I use for a website?⌄
JPG works well for photos, PNG for lossless graphics, and WebP or AVIF can be useful for smaller modern web images. Consider browser compatibility and compare actual outputs.
