Understanding Your BMI

This result falls within the standard adult category called Healthy Weight. It is one piece of information, not confirmation of an individual’s overall health.

During pregnancy, current-weight BMI is not interpreted in the same way. Pre-pregnancy BMI is used in pregnancy-related guidance; this tool does not make pregnancy recommendations. CDC pregnancy guidance ↗

How the BMI Calculator Works

Get your BMI in three simple steps.

1

Enter Your Measurements

Add your height and weight in metric or US units.

How Is BMI Calculated?

BMI uses your weight and height with a simple formula.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Example: 65 kg ÷ 1.70² = 22.5 kg/m²

170 cmHeight
65 kgWeight
22.5BMI

US formula: lb ÷ in² × approximately 703. EvryNest converts US units to metric using exact conversion factors before calculating.

BMI vs Body Fat

Different measurements. Different information.

BMI

Uses height and weight

Body Fat

Assesses body composition

BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. The two measures are not interchangeable.

What BMI Does — and Doesn’t — Tell You

BMI can help with:

Screening weight relative to height

Identifying broad BMI categories

Population-level health assessment

Describing changes in BMI over time

BMI cannot tell you:

Exact body-fat percentage

Where body fat is stored

Muscle vs fat mass or bone density

Individual disease risk by itself

Overall fitness or health

People with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI without having high body fat.

Add Waist Measurement Optional

Another measurement, considered alongside other health information.

Waist-to-Height Ratio—

Uses your calculated height of 170.0 cm.

Waist-to-height ratio adds information about central adiposity. It is not a diagnosis, and no risk threshold is applied here. NICE guidance ↗

Standard adult category: Healthy Weight

Height: 170.0 cm · Weight: 65.0 kg

BMI is a screening measure based on height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat and does not provide a diagnosis. Individual health assessment may require additional information and professional medical advice.

Adult vs Child / Teen BMI

Adults aged 20 and older use standard BMI categories. For ages 2–19, BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentiles.

2–19years

Growth needs its own context.

A percentile chart needs a validated reference dataset. We do not draw an unvalidated chart or estimate percentiles.

BMI by Age / Growth Context

A single measurement is only one part of growth assessment. Age in months, the reference standard and growth over time all matter. Under age 2, use an age-appropriate professional assessment.

Why BMI Thresholds Can Differ

Some clinical guidelines use lower thresholds for certain ethnic populations because cardiometabolic risk may occur at a lower BMI.

NICE uses lower practical thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds.

South Asian Health Context

Some guidelines use lower BMI thresholds for South Asian populations. BMI still needs to be interpreted together with other health information. These are separate clinical contexts, not a silent replacement for the standard categories shown here.

No ethnicity or nationality is inferred. Your location does not change this calculator’s standard adult categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI?⌄

Body Mass Index (BMI) is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It is a screening measure, not a direct measure of body fat or a diagnosis.

How is BMI calculated?⌄

Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For US measurements, the familiar formula is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by approximately 703. This calculator converts units precisely before calculating.

What is a healthy BMI?⌄

The standard adult category named Healthy Weight covers BMI 18.5 to less than 25. A category does not establish that an individual is healthy; other health information matters.

What are the BMI categories for adults?⌄

For adults 20 and older: below 18.5 is Underweight; 18.5 to less than 25 is Healthy Weight; 25 to less than 30 is Overweight; and 30 or above is the Obesity category. The latter is divided into Classes 1, 2 and 3 at 30, 35 and 40.

Does BMI differ for men and women?⌄

The standard adult BMI formula and category thresholds do not depend on sex. Body composition and other factors may still differ, which is one reason BMI needs context.

Does BMI differ by age?⌄

Adults use standard category thresholds from age 20. Ages 2–19 require BMI-for-age assessment using age- and sex-specific growth references. Older adults may also need additional individual context.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?⌄

BMI calculates weight relative to height accurately, but cannot distinguish muscle from fat. People with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI without having high body fat.

Does BMI measure body fat?⌄

No. BMI uses height and weight. Body-fat assessment uses different methods and provides different information. BMI and body-fat percentage are not interchangeable.

What BMI should a child have?⌄

There is no single adult-style BMI range for all children. Interpretation depends on age and sex using a validated growth reference and should consider growth over time.

How is BMI calculated for children and teenagers?⌄

The basic BMI formula is the same, but interpretation uses age- and sex-specific percentiles. EvryNest does not yet provide validated child percentiles; the Child / Teen tab links to the CDC calculator instead.

Why can BMI thresholds differ between populations?⌄

Some clinical guidance, including NICE, uses lower practical thresholds for certain ethnic populations because cardiometabolic risk may occur at lower BMI. EvryNest shows standard adult categories and never infers or changes thresholds based on location or ethnicity.

Is BMI useful during pregnancy?⌄

Standard current-weight BMI is not interpreted in the same way during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy BMI is used in pregnancy-related guidance. This tool does not provide pregnancy weight recommendations.

Does BMI work for older adults?⌄

BMI may need additional context at age 65 and older. Health conditions, muscle mass, functional status and other factors can affect how a healthcare professional interprets it.

What is a healthy weight for my height?⌄

This page calculates the weight corresponding to BMI 18.5–24.9 at the entered height. It is a mathematical reference interval, not a personalized recommendation or a target weight.

Can I calculate BMI in pounds and feet?⌄

Yes. Select US Units and enter whole feet, inches from 0 to less than 12, and pounds. Switching units preserves the underlying measurements without rounding the calculation.

Does EvryNest store my height and weight?⌄

This calculator does not save measurements, use a backend for calculation, or place health values in URLs or analytics events. Results remain in this page until it is closed or reset. Share copies only the BMI summary after you explicitly select Share.
